Caros colegas,
Como fomos destacando em números anteriores, o novo Programa-Quadro de Investigação e Inovação da União Europeia – Horizonte Europa – vai ditar em grande medida o financiamento de projetos entre 1 de janeiro de 2021 e 31 de dezembro de 2027. Os programas de trabalho dos vários pilares e clusters estiveram em discussão e começam agora a ser conhecidas as versões finais. Consideramos que as possibilidades da FMUC para atrair financiamento significativo para Investigação e Inovação nos próximos anos irão depender fortemente da capacidade dos seus colaboradores integrarem consórcios internacionais competitivos e potencialmente vencedores em projetos submetidos às diversas Calls do Horizonte Europa. Para que isso venha a ser uma realidade, precisamos de começar desde já a conhecer as características dos diversos pilares e clusters, particularmente do Cluster Saúde, composto por seis áreas principais, designadas Destinations. O programa de trabalhos deste cluster, contendo as Calls para 2021 e 2022, foi recentemente lançado e está disponível para análise. A participação em sessões de esclarecimento e em eventos de procura de parceiros para projetos pode ser determinante. A respeito do Cluster Saúde, destacamos o InfoDay e o Horizon Europe Brokerage Event, que vão decorrer nos dias 2 e 5 de julho, respetivamente. Nesta edição damos especial enfoque ao Horizonte Europa e destacamos ainda diversos projetos que receberam apoio do GGI na fase de submissão ou durante o processo de avaliação em audição.

Recuperação da visão no glaucoma: ativação do recetor A3 de adenosina como estratégia para promover a regeneração dos axónios das células ganglionares da retina, submetido ao Prémio Maria de Sousa, tendo como coordenadora a investigadora da FMUC Raquel Boia.
Radiossensibilidade individual de portadores da mutação no gene BRCA: o impacto das doses de radiação diagnóstica, submetido ao Prémio Maria de Sousa, tendo como coordenadora a Investigadora da FMUC Ana Salomé Lourenço.
Foram conhecidos no passado mês de maio os resultados da avaliação remota dos projetos submetidos à Call do EIT Health para o Business Plan (BP) 2022. Todos os projetos apoiados pelo GGI e submetidos no pilar de Educação (5) seguiram para a fase de avaliação seguinte (audições), onde a equipa do consórcio é convidada a apresentar o projeto de forma concisa, focada e apelativa (formato pitch) para um painel composto por 5 avaliadores internacionais, seguindo-se uma sessão de perguntas e respostas. Esta última fase tem o peso relativo de 75% na avaliação final dos projetos. Nenhum projeto submetido ao pilar Inovação (5) passou a esta última fase de avaliação. Os resultados finais serão conhecidos a 19 de julho.
A Europa no nosso Horizonte!
Destacamos nesta edição algumas informações potencialmente relevantes a respeito do Horizonte Europa, o Programa-Quadro de Investigação e Inovação da União Europeia que teve início a 1 de janeiro de 2021 e decorrerá até 31 de dezembro de 2027.
• Vão decorrer InfoDays sobre os programas de trabalho dos vários pilares e clusters do Horizonte Europa. No dia 2 de julho o InfoDay será dedicado ao Cluster Saúde;
• No dia 5 de julho decorrerá um evento dedicado ao Cluster Saúde para procura e contacto de futuros parceiros para consórcios em projetos candidatos a Calls do Horizonte Europa. O Horizon Europe Brokerage Event irá decorrer totalmente online, sendo o registo obrigatório até 30 de junho;
• Estão planeados diversos webinares, organizados pela Comissão Europeia, sobre o programa de trabalho do Horizonte Europa. Recomendamos a consulta da tabela de oportunidades de financiamento divulgada regularmente pelo GGI, onde estão elencados links para os webinares e outras informações potencialmente relevantes;
• Por fim, damos destaque à oportunidade de se poder registar como perito externo para avaliação e monitorização de candidaturas a Calls do Horizonte Europa, bem como para outras atividades de relevo, incluindo a emissão de pareceres técnicos, a preparação e avaliação dos programas de financiamento ou mesmo o desenho de políticas de financiamento. Trata-se de uma oportunidade ímpar com diversas vantagens, incluindo poder ser uma voz ativa no panorama europeu de financiamento da investigação. O processo de registo é bastante simples.
Equipa do iCBR-FMUC ganha Concurso de Economia Circular da Rede Campus Sustentável (RCS) 2021 - “From Linear to Circular Ideas”
O projeto “Biomassa inovadora da folha senescente do mirtilo: convertendo resíduos em recursos nutracêuticos sustentáveis de valor acrescentado”, liderado pela Investigadora Sofia Viana do iCBR-FMUC, venceu o concurso “From Linear to Circular Ideas” promovido pela Rede Campus Sustentável de Portugal com o apoio da rede Smart Waste Portugal, Associação Natureza Portugal, Organização Circular Economy Portugal, Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco, Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná e pela Universidade de Coimbra, que contou com 144 participantes de mais de 20 Instituições do Ensino Superior Portuguesas e Brasileiras.

The intent of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to support research projects with the intent to increase medical knowledge and generate data on the treatment of Metastatic Breast Cancer (mBC) with CDK 4/6 inhibitors:
- To generate Real World Data (RWD) from the real clinical experience with CDK 4/6 inhibitor treatment of mBC;
- To generate data on Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO) evaluating safety and/or efficacy of treatment in a special population with mBC;

The Foundation's IBD Ventures Programme aims to support the discovery or development of a specific product that has the potential to have a positive impact in the IBD field. Successful projects should be approximately 12 months in duration. Specific intermediate and final milestones must be identified at the start of the project.
Research projects thematic may include (but are not limited to):
- Therapeutics: small and/or large molecules, gene therapies, cell therapies and nutraceuticals;
- Devices and diagnostics: medical devices, imaging agents and laboratory tests;
- Healthcare technology: software, services and other technology-based products.
Applicants should demonstrate an up-to-date and clear understanding of how the proposed product would address a specific, unmet need in IBD. Substantiation of the unmet medical need (eg based on clinical research or input from patients and clinicians) is encouraged. Research proposals should also include preliminary evidence in support of the scientific validity and commercial potential of the proposed product. Validation studies and insights from patient data are encouraged. Applicants should prioritize activities considered to be the most critical for the discovery or development of the product.

The EFSD Anniversary Fund Programme joins in the celebration of the 100-Year Anniversary of the discovery of insulin with the aim at supporting the most talented investigators in the fields of diabetes research in Europe. Projects may be basic, translational and/or clinical research on diabetes or its comorbidities and complications. Research will be supported through the award of grants, each of up to Euro 200,000. The duration of each award may be one year or longer, depending upon the needs of the project and as justified in the application.

The Foundation's Genetics Grants seek to accelerate the rate of progress in genetics research by supporting novel approaches and contrarian research, particularly research that is undervalued by traditional funding sources. Projects can take the form of basic or translational research, or can be educational programmes to increase worldwide public awareness of how genetics-related research and its applications can advance human development at individual and society levels.

The aim of the requests for proposals is to support projects that focus on improving the care of patients by addressing knowledge gaps in following areas:
Atrial Fibrillation (AF):
- Updates on anticoagulation guidelines/guidance;
- Anticoagulation in special populations (i.e. elderly/fragile, obese, renal, comorbidities and/or polypharmacy);
- Anticoagulation and cardiac peripheral procedures (ie bioprosthetic valves, ablation, cardioversion);
- Increasing and scale-up AF diagnosis and its impact in morbidity and mortality.
Venous Thromboembolism (VTE):
- VTE and length of anticoagulation treatment;
- VTE bleeding and thrombosis risk assessment through patient characteristic (age, comorbidities, etc);
- New data on cancer associated (Ca-VTE) thrombosis management;
- Updates on anticoagulation guidelines/guidance.
Eligible applicants are medical, nursing, allied health, and/or pharmacy professional schools, healthcare institutions (both large and small), professional associations and medical societies, medical education companies, and other entities with a mission related to healthcare professional education and/or healthcare improvement. For projects offering continuing education credit, the requesting organisation must be accredited.
The typical grant maximum under this request for proposals will be up to $150,000.

The Santa Casa Neurociências Award, with two distinct prizes of 200,000€ each, represent an annual investment of 400,000€ to promote scientific or clinic research in the multidisciplinary fields of biosciences namely, neurology, neuropathology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, chemistry, pharmacology, immunology among others.
The Melo e Castro Award will distinguish the best project in the field of spinal cord injury recovery and treatment.
The Mantero Belard Award aims to dynamize scientific or clinic research in the field of Neurodegenerative disorders associated with aging, like Parkinson Disease and Alzheimer Disease.
Projects must be developed in National territory although international collaborations are accepted.

The L'Oréal Portugal Honor Medals for Women in Science intend to carry out advanced studies of scientific research, at the post-doctoral level, in universities or other Portuguese institutions of recognized merit, in the domain of Sciences, Engineering and Technologies for Health or for the Environment.
All applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree less than 5 years before the date of the opening of the call and who do not complete, by the end of the current year, over 35 years of age can apply. The unit value of the Medals of Honor is 15,000€ awarded in a single instalment.

The Consolidate Call supports mature innovative projects (TRL4 or higher) with solid IP and commercialisation strategies to achieve investment-ready stages and bring them closer to the market. Projects must be related to the areas of Life, Medical and Health Sciences. Projects must be mature in their Technology Readiness Level (at least TRL4), having performed significant valorisation activities and a defined Commercialisation Strategy. Projects may have proven experience in other Acceleration Programmes. Financial support consists of a grant of up to €300,000 for 24 months.

The ADDF provides funding to academic centers and biotechs from around the world that are advancing therapeutic and biomarker development for Alzheimer's and related dementias. We have dedicated our funding to several key areas:

Fundación MAPFRE is seeking to promote research projects in two areas of action, health promotion and insurance and social protection.
Research projects related to health promotion have a maximum allocation of 30,000 euros per grant and must deal with the following themes:
- Strategies for habit change: prevention of obesity and the promotion of physical activity;
- Patient education;
- Physical injury assessment: assessment of the consequences of an event (traumatic or accidental, medical negligence, aggression or illness) on the person’s health and its impact on the essential activities of ordinary life and other specific activities of personal development (moral damage, loss of quality of life);
