Caros colegas,

Chegamos ao final deste ano completamente atípico e o balanço que fazemos deixa-nos uma sensação agridoce no que diz respeito às candidaturas de projetos de investigação submetidas para obtenção de financiamento a nível nacional e internacional.  

Doce porque é notório que nunca a FMUC esteve envolvida em tantas candidaturas (o GGI deu apoio a mais de uma centena) e, mais ainda, porque elas envolveram um espectro bem mais alargado de docentes e investigadores, que se aproximaram de nós, alinharam os seus interesses e projetos com os requisitos das Calls e tentando a sua sorte. Não é apenas uma questão de sorte, obviamente que não, apesar de ela fazer parte da equação, mas para se testar a sorte é preciso ter boas ideias, desenhar bons projetos e ir a jogo! Constatamos com enorme satisfação que os colaboradores da FMUC foram muito a jogo durante este ano, e isso é uma prova de vivacidade e inconformismo que nos deixa com renovado entusiasmo para o futuro! Tudo isto apesar do ano sui generis, que nos trouxe novos e exigentes desafios que tivemos de enfrentar.  

Agri porque gostaríamos que os resultados obtidos tivessem sido mais robustos, até porque trabalhámos todos com esse intuito. Sabemos que o financiamento foi substancialmente reduzido, em parte devido ao redireccionamento de verbas para colmatar necessidades mais prementes, nomeadamente para a investigação destinada a dar respostas céleres a diferentes facetas relacionadas com a Covid-19. Os valores alcançados não foram inferiores aos obtidos em anos anteriores, pelo contrário, mas a verdade é que queríamos mais, e assumimos sem rodeios essa ambição.  

Nesta edição damos o merecido destaque a vários projetos aprovados para financiamento nas últimas semanas em diversas Calls, felicitando os vencedores pelo seu êxito. Esta é não apenas uma excelente forma de terminar um ano difícil mas também uma nota de conforto e inspiração que deverá pautar a nossa entrada no novo ano. Salientamos ainda duas novas Calls entretanto abertas: do EIT Health para o Business Plan 2022 e da FCT para projetos em todos os domínios científicos. São novas oportunidades que devemos começar já a agarrar para que 2021 comece com ânimo e tenhamos maiores possibilidades de o concluir com um sabor “somente” adocicado!

Seminário sobre Nova Call do EIT Health
para o Business Plan 2022

A convite do GGI, Mikolaj Gurdala, Innovation and EIT Health InnoStars Manager, esteve presente num seminário extra do iCBR, no passado dia 25 de novembro. Este seminário online teve como objetivo a apresentação dos principais tópicos referentes à Nova Call do EIT Health para o Business Plan 2022, cujo prazo para submissão de Expressões de Interesse termina a 13 de janeiro de 2021.

Projetos recentemente aprovados
para financiamento que receberam apoio do GGI 

Nas últimas semanas diversos projetos apoiados pelo GGI foram aprovados para financiamento:

• “RADIOEX”, liderado pela Investigadora da FMUC Célia Gomes, foi financiado no âmbito do Concurso da FCT para projetos de IC&DT em todos os domínios científicos;

• “COVIRNA”, liderado pelo Luxembourg Institute of Health, tendo como responsável na Universidade de Coimbra o Investigador da FMUC Lino Ferreira, foi financiado no âmbito do concurso H2020 COVID19 Call;

• “SMASHMEDICINE Phase II - Bidirectional learning between patients, students and doctors”, liderado por University of Oxford, tendo como responsável na Universidade de Coimbra o Professor Carlos Robalo Cordeiro, foi financiado no âmbito do concurso EIT Health BP 2021;

• “Cerebrovascular hypothesis of stress-induced behavioural alterations”, liderado pela Investigadora da FMUC Ana Paula Silva Martins, foi aprovado para financiamento no âmbito do concurso BIAL Research Grants;

• “EV-Cardio - Regeneração cardíaca mediada pela administração sistémica de vesículas extracelulares com preferência para o coração”, liderado pelo ICNAS Produção, tendo como responsável na FMUC o Investigador Lino Ferreira, foi financiado no âmbito do concurso PT2020 - 17/SI/2019 - SI I&DT - I&D Empresas - Projetos em Copromoção.

Nova edição do concurso para Projetos de IC&DT
em todos os domínios científicos da FCT

É já no próximo dia 28 de Janeiro de 2021 que a FCT abre novo concurso para submissão de candidaturas a projetos de IC&DT em todos os domínios científicos. Esta edição apresenta algumas alterações, das quais gostaríamos de destacar o retorno da tipologia de projetos de investigação de carácter exploratório com uma duração máxima de 18 meses e um financiamento até 50.000 euros.

O GGI encontra-se inteiramente disponível para ajudar nas candidaturas e irá dinamizar, à semelhança do concurso anterior, sessões de esclarecimento sobre esta Call. Para além disso, entre 28 de Janeiro e 10 de Março iremos estar disponíveis por Zoom, todas as 6ª feiras das 12h00 às 13h00, para esclarecimento de dúvidas, sem que isso signifique que outras vias de comunicação não se mantenham igualmente disponíveis.

EIT Health - European Institute of Innovation and Technology | 
Business Plan 2022 | 


The Business Plan 2022 (BP 2022) is organized in three main types of projects:
i) – Education:
• Co-Create! programmes: design, create, and deliver innovative, impactful, and high-quality education interventions that educate and equip the healthcare workforce, entrepreneurs, citizens, patients, and talents across Europe to tackle public health challenges;
• Degree programmes: develop and support pan-European master’s and doctoral programmes that deliver innovation and entrepreneurship skills to students.
ii) – Innovation:
• Partner-driven projects: develop products and/or services that will generate revenues and costs savings when introduced in the market;
• High Value Care projects (HVC projects) focus on transformations in healthcare systems and organisations, seeking to improve health outcomes with no technology development;
• Start-up-driven projects.
iii) – Business Creation:
Centered in the following six thematic Focus Areas where innovation is needed:
1. Towards Health Continuum Care Pathways
2. Bringing Care Home
3. Creating the Enabling Environment for Healthcare Transformation
4. Workplace to the Health Place
5. Harnessing the Power of Real‐World Data
6. Fostering Healthy Lives by Introducing Behavioral Change.

Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation | 
4 Core Funding Programs

The ADDF provides funding to academic centers and biotechs from around the world that are advancing therapeutic and biomarker development for Alzheimer's and related dementias. The funding is dedicated to several key areas:
• Translational research to develop new drugs and build preclinical evidence
• IND-enabling studies and early-stage clinical trials for novel and repurposed drugs
• Development and validation of plasma, CSF, neuroimaging and digital biomarkers
• Epidemiological studies and comparative effectiveness research
The four Core Funding Programs are:
• Drug Development RFP
• Program to Accelerate Clinical Trials (PACT) RFP
• Neuroimaging and CSF Biomarker Development RFP
• Prevention Pipeline RFP.

Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation
and Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration | 
The Treat Ftd Fund

The Treat FTD fund aims to support programs testing drugs or devices for FTD disorders while building clinical data around novel FTD mechanisms in human disease and corresponding biomarker endpoints in response to treatment.

International Team for Implantology (ITI) | 
ITI Research Grant programme

The ITI Research Grant programme supports preclinical and clinical research in implant dentistry and related fields. Two types of grant are available:
• Small Grant (SG): this grant is primarily intended for research proposals submitted by newer investigators who have been working within established groups and wish to expand their scope and level of responsibility or want to establish a track record in implant dentistry. This may be by pursuing their own research interests or by building up their own research group.
• Large Grant (LG): this grant type will be awarded only to experienced researchers or research groups that have established a reputation for credibility and thoroughness in the field as demonstrated by a continuous publication record in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals.
The maximum grant is CHF 50,000 (Small Grant) or CHF 200,000 (Large Grant).

5. 
Psychiatry Consortium | 
Third call for proposals

The Psychiatry Consortium is seeking project proposals which focus on the validation of novel molecular drug-targets for mental health conditions, in particular: psychotic disorders, affective disorders, cognitive disorders and psychiatric symptoms associated with dementia.
The Psychiatry Consortium intend to fund projects which:
• Are supported by robust evidence that links the molecular target to human disease, which can be further developed or validated,
• Provide a sound therapeutic hypothesis of how target modulation may have a therapeutic effect,
• Will enable tools for target validation e.g. through optimization of existing tool compounds to improve selectivity, potency, bioavailability
Projects seeking to identify target modulation biomarkers relevant to disease will also be in scope.

6. 
Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) | 
Projetos de IC&DT em todos os domínios científicos

In this call there are two types of grants:
• Scientific Research and technological development projects – either individual or in consortium they should focus in relevant and innovative scientific questions which contribute in a significant way for the advance of scientific knowledge. Imply scientific production throughout the project. Maximum duration – 36 months with a budget up to 250.000€.
• Exploratory projects (PeX) – for projects focusing on scientific or technological research exploring novel/original ideas or concepts with innovation potential. Eligible only for individual applications, projects must have a maximum duration of 18 months with a budget up to 50.000€.
There are several alterations in this call regarding the eligibility of the PI and Co-PI so we strongly advise the careful analysis of the opening notice for this call.

La Caixa Foundation | 
Caixa Impulse Consolidate

Projects must be related to the areas of Life, Medical and Health Sciences and must be mature in their Technology Readiness Level, having performed significant valorization activities and a defined Commercialization Strategy. Must have proven experience in other Acceleration Programs. Beneficiaries must be non-profit legal entities based in Spain or Portugal: universities, university foundations, research and transfer centres, technology centres, hospitals, hospital foundations and non-profit institutions whose main activity is research.
Project leaders must be legal persons with tertiary qualifications (university graduate, professor or doctor). Project Leader may not be involved in more than one application.

BIAL Foundation and Portuguese Medical Association |  
Maria de Sousa Award

This award (up to €25.000) aims to reward and support young Portuguese scientific researchers, up to 35 years old, for Health Sciences topic research projects. An internship at an international center of excellence is included.
